A shadow stepped out of the night, into the light of the streetlamp. He wasn’t tall, but he was broad shouldered. Wearing a black PVC trench coat, black jeans, and black boots, the only thing that stood out was his shock of blond hair. His eyes were blue. Not washed out faded jeans blue, but striking, deep, ocean blue. They squinted against the smoke of the cigarette, dangling from his smooth, red lips. He leaned against the street lamp, waiting.

She appeared, seemingly from nowhere. She was small, petite. Short streaked blond hair, eyes equally as blue, she wore a black blazer, jeans, and pony print black and white scuffs. She walked over to the man, her heels clicking on the sidewalk. She took the cigarette from his mouth, and crushed it underneath her tiny, perfect foot.

"Shouldn’t smoke Edward…bad for your health." she said in her husky, low voice.

"Lots of things bad for your health these days gorgeous" he said in his Notting Hill accent, looking deep into her baby blues, and smiling slowly, his lips curling upward. She noticed the small scar on his otherwise perfect, squared off chin.

"No time for jokes Mr. I…there’s work to be done." She said, pulling a sheaf of papers from her blazer pocket. She handed them to him. He reached out to take them, his manicured, strong hand grazing her small, soft one. "Instructions, passport, and cash for your trip…this is your last chance to prove your innocence" she said sternly, trying to hide the undeniable ache she felt for him.

"Nobody’s innocent anymore sweetheart, I just go where the action is, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t." He put the papers in his coat pocket, and reached out and put his large hands on her shoulders, and pulling her to him until his face was inches from hers. She felt her resolve draining away, as he cupped her chin in his hand, and kissed her softly. She closed her eyes and let his lips linger on hers.

He pulled away, only slightly. He asked "how long until my plane takes off, luv?" She fought to remember how to speak. "You have one hour. The car is waiting under the bridge to take you to the airport. Your driver has your contact’s name and address. Are you ready?"

His eyes gleamed in the reflection of the streetlight. "Almost…one thing I have to take care of first…" and he kissed her again, letting his tongue slowly explore the inside of her mouth, moving his hands around to the nape of her neck, and pressing the small of her back, holding her tightly. She responded, her arms encircling his strong, broad form, almost losing her balance. They remained in the embrace for as long as they dared. He pulled back, and said "Accompany me to the airport, I will need your protection" with his wry smile. For the first time she let him see the effect his charms had on her, and she smiled. She touched his face lightly with her fingertips and said "we have to hurry Edward, there isn’t much time".

He looked at her, flashing fire into her soul. He kissed her cheek, stroked her hair and took her hand in his, leading her away, into the night. Her footsteps fell in with his, she leaned against him as they walked. He smelled of cigarettes and rain. The fog swirled up around their legs, and they disappeared into the mist. His voice was like an echo in the darkness, "Gorgeous, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

The End
